University of NSW
Lend Lease engaged Peter Campbell Design to design and implement a Wayfinding Signage Masterplan for the Lahz Nimmo-designed redevelopment of the Wallace Wurth Building (WW) at the University of New South Wales (UNSW).
The entire development has a budget of $146 million and will accommodate over 1250 students and 750 research personnel. Stage 1 of the project, the new east wing, was completed in May 2013. The next two stages, which include refurbishment of the existing buildings, is scheduled to be completed in April 2014.
The new facility is large and complex with improved teaching spaces, lecture theatres, clinical skills and exercise physiology suites; teaching laboratory spaces, special purposes areas, administration, scientific microbiological research laboratories and associated offices.
Despite a tight budget and schedule, Peter Campbell Design took a holistic approach to the project to ensure that the outcome both met the extensive brief, and integrated with Lahz Nimmo's architectural design. The resulting signage system for the facility is unique at UNSW in that it's forms, colour palette, philosophical and typographic approaches are drawn from an understanding of the architectural vision and intent.
The signage project encompassed all building, statutory and dangerous goods signage, as well as a comprehensive interpretive wayfinding system. Using interpretive maps and a logical hierarchy of signage types, the wayfinding system guides students, visitors and staff through the complex spaces of the facility, revealing the various spatial and managerial relationships that exist, whilst providing a strongly unifying element within the precinct.
